Hi everyone, I have been looking around for case studies that have adopted systems thinking and gender-transformative lens together in evaluation. I work with ISST which runs a Gender Transformative Evaluation course for early and mid career professionals and we are developing some new material for the same.
Published by the Tavistock Institute's publication 'Evaluation' it has been peer-reviewed and was invited for inclusion in the journal from the 2016 European Evaluation Society's conference proceedings.

The full evaluation guidance now dubbed the 'ISE4GEMs' is in its final stages of production with UN Women in New York. With only a few more production stages to go through the finished product will be available in the not too distant future. It's full citation is now:

Hi everyone. We'd welcome your view point and experience of working with a 'Theory of Change'.

They have been broadly criticized for being too cause-effect for systemic evaluation. But is it possible to change this view by asking critical questions about its nature? Can we ask questions about the TOC's determination? What assumptions underlye it? Does it conceal power dynamics that would be opened up if we were to probe more deeply at the TOCs margins? Can we ask questions about the TOC's determination? What assumptions underlye it? Does it conceal power dynamics that would be opened up if we were to probe more deeply at the TOCs margins? Is there ever a circumstance where we can deviate from the TOC to pursue ideas and information and still call it a TOC? In short - can we make TOCs systemic?

We are now officially in the trial stage to analyse GEMSE theory into practice. We've partnered with an agency to help think through what a GEMSE approach to developing a Concept Note can do for evaluation design. As always, your thoughts are most welcome. Anne and Ellen

This is a question that seems to come up a lot for me. What is it that practitioners really need to be systemic evaluators? Better tools? A way to do a holistic evaluation analysis of impact? Or training and professional development?

Most appreciative of your opinion.

Cheers,

Hi members.

Ellen and I have posted a blog which focusses on our interest to bring into social systemic evaluation the marginalised and often voiceless ecological landscape. That is, nature, environment, or other-than-humans. It goes by many names. Can evaluations question how well the 'inhabit-ability' of a place has been altered or changed for the better - for all biodiverse species residing there, not just human?

The tragic news this week of 93% bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef really prompted this blog. How can we use our influence as evaluators to better account for our impact on ecological landscapes to prevent further losses?

Welcome new members!

We are curious about how you use and think about 'boundaries' in your work. It is a key systems thinking concept. Boundaries relate to the ideas/tools/models that are used in evaluation decision-making. When we reflect on the boundaries, we call this 'reflection on boundary judgements'. Do you do this consciously? Do you do it with evaluands or the sponsors of evaluation projects? How often during an evaluation would you take time out to reflect on the boundaries…

Do you do this consciously? Do you do it with evaluands or the sponsors of evaluation projects? How often during an evaluation would you take time out to reflect on the boundaries of methods, ideas or tools you're using? Does it happen often or not at all? No right or wrongs here - we'd just love to hear what is happening in your practice.

We believe that systems thinking has a place in evaluation because it lets us think strategically about complexity and multiple intersectional influences that impact an intervention. What do you think?
