Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the most widespread human rights violations worldwide. Globally at least 35% of women experience violence in their lifetime and 30% experience intimate partner violence..

The project “Community Responses to Violence Against Women & Girls in Kenya and Tanzania” (2015-2018) aimed  to enable and support women and girls to challenge social and community norms in relation to violence against women and girls (VAWG). The project particularly focused on female genital mutilation (FGM) in Kenya and child, early and forced marriage (CEFM) in Tanzania.

We know that locally based women's rights organisations play a pivotal role in ensuring that laws and policies are effectively implemented by, among other things, raising awareness, influencing elected officials, mobilising communities and changing social norms and behaviours.

This paper shares learnings on working with women's rights organisations to create an enabling environment to reduce violence and realise women's rights. Read.
