lJoin us this Thursday for our next Insight to Action event, as we host the 2018 Mariam K. Chamberlain Award winner, Ashleigh LoVette, PhD candidate at the Brown University School of Public Health. Ashleigh will discuss the intersections between resilience, gender and health - along with the insights she has gained during her journey to become a global health scholar.

Populations disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic face social and structural conditions that predispose them to negative mental and sexual health outcomes. South African girls and young women face some of the highest HIV incidence rates in the world, but the majority of public health research attempts to address this issue through deficit-based approaches. Alternatively, strength-based approaches, including resilience, seek to acknowledge and honor the ability of girls and young women to thrive in spite of sustained HIV risk.

Ashleigh will share initial findings from her dissertation. She will also highlight the growing area of resilience-based public health research and how these results can inform programming and policy that leverages the strengths of individuals and the communities in which they reside to improve health outcomes.
