Astha Ramaiya [Co-author] Shared the Journal Article - Published in Child Abuse & Neglect, June 2026

A new systematic review published in Child Abuse & Neglect examined the link between mental health and technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse (TF-CSEA). Analysing 10 studies with over 25,000 participants across seven countries, researchers found that depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and prior trauma were consistently associated with victimisation. Crucially, the relationship appears bidirectional with mental health difficulties both preceding and resulting from exploitation; creating potential cycles of repeated harm. Perhaps most striking: traditional parental monitoring through technological surveillance showed limited protective effects. What actually mattered? The quality of parent-child relationships including, open communication, emotional warmth, and trust. The findings suggest prevention efforts should combine universal school-based programmes building emotional resilience with targeted support for high-risk youth, while parent education should prioritise connection over control. With 12.5% of children globally experiencing online solicitation annually, understanding these psychological pathways is essential for effective child protection.

Event Description

New course! Learn how to keep track of progress and measure effects in changing contexts

Changes generated by advocacy- and policy-influencing interventions are among the most difficult results to measure. Many actors with different or contradicting interests are often involved. Results mostly appear in the long run. Policy targets and media trends can change rapidly. Your advocacy tactics need adaptation accordingly, and flexibility is crucial. Your M&E system should be able to handle these changes. Knowing the crucial elements to monitor will make data gathering easier and your evaluation analyses more effective.

What you will gain

  • Discover and learn how to work with different evaluation methods to monitor advocacy initiatives
  • Use your design and planning of policy-influencing intervention as a starting point of your M&E system
  • Keep record and track of relevant stakeholders, targets and policy decision-making chains
  • Learn to create evaluation interventions showing the results of the advocacy projects that you have funded
  • Be able to present results in a confident way and impress your clients with innovative approaches

Your profile

You are a professional involved in the planning or management of advocacy projects or programmes, or in charge of coordinating the monitoring and evaluation of such programmes. This course is also interesting for evaluators conducting evaluations of advocacy projects or programmes, or those in charge of appraising advocacy programmes on behalf of a donor organisation.
