Abstract
"This chapter blends African oral and written narratives, lived experiences with a genetic chronic disability and a Roman Catholic upbringing. These will be interrogated to illustrate the role of alternative explanations in influencing advocacy and activism for the lives, wellbeing, dignity and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Particularly, this chapter is an exploration of self-identity and how persons with disabilities are conditioned to view ourselves in specific ways while highlighting alternative perceptions available is presented by the author. It engages the works of several African and African-descendent authors who feature persons with disabilities as characters in their books and relies on narrative prosthesis as the basis for this engagement."

Applications are now open for our Facilitating Gender Transformative Evaluation (FGTE) course, tailored for early to mid‑career professionals (≈ 5 years experience) from India, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, interested in exploring the use of a critical gender transformative lens when conducting evaluations?
ISST is now taking applications for its FGTE cohort of 2025!
Open to beginner to midlevel professionals with about 5 years of past work experience in project/program management/monitoring and evaluation and familiarity with and use of gender theories and concepts.
The learning outcome from the course, divided into seven modules, will be centered around the following:
- Perspectives on key concepts of evaluation and gender
- Engendering Evaluation Approaches
- Develop an evaluative thinking and apply gender concepts to evaluation
- Skill-building on the use of Gender Transformative Evaluation Approaches, Frameworks and Tools
- Group work for peer learning.
