Abstract
"This chapter blends African oral and written narratives, lived experiences with a genetic chronic disability and a Roman Catholic upbringing. These will be interrogated to illustrate the role of alternative explanations in influencing advocacy and activism for the lives, wellbeing, dignity and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Particularly, this chapter is an exploration of self-identity and how persons with disabilities are conditioned to view ourselves in specific ways while highlighting alternative perceptions available is presented by the author. It engages the works of several African and African-descendent authors who feature persons with disabilities as characters in their books and relies on narrative prosthesis as the basis for this engagement."

Objectives of the event
1. Highlight the need for and effectiveness of gender-responsive disaster risk reduction in COVID-19 recovery.
2. Identify challenges and good practices in developing and implementing gender-responsive disaster risk reduction strategies, policies and plans at the country level.
3. Discuss the specific challenges of compounded disasters and how a gender-transformative approach can help reduce multi-hazard disaster risk.
Modality and partners of the event
The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, are bringing together a range of partners including Australian Aid, United Nations Population Fund, United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, Women’s International Network for Disaster Risk Reduction, Permanent Mission of Finland, Stockholm Environment Institute and the Huairou Commission to organize a 90 minute virtual event to discuss how a gender-responsive approach to COVID-19 recovery can build resilience and reduce future disaster risk
