Abstract
"This chapter blends African oral and written narratives, lived experiences with a genetic chronic disability and a Roman Catholic upbringing. These will be interrogated to illustrate the role of alternative explanations in influencing advocacy and activism for the lives, wellbeing, dignity and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Particularly, this chapter is an exploration of self-identity and how persons with disabilities are conditioned to view ourselves in specific ways while highlighting alternative perceptions available is presented by the author. It engages the works of several African and African-descendent authors who feature persons with disabilities as characters in their books and relies on narrative prosthesis as the basis for this engagement."

Resumen/Abstract
La crisis que provocaron los huracanes Irma y María en la isla obliga a que se redefina el manejo de los desastres naturales desde el gobierno y otros sectores. La proximidad a las comunidades más pobres y aisladas y la capacidad para entablar alianzas rápidas situó a las organizaciones sin fines de lucro en la primera línea de la emergencia con una respuesta efectiva. Pero más allá de la atención a lo inmediato, desde estas organizaciones no gubernamentales se están escuchando también resultados e iniciativas innovadoras. Esta reflexión busca llamar la atención sobre la necesidad de crear más conocimiento sobre estos fenómenos y desarrollar una respuesta a las emergencias más coordinada, colectiva y comunitaria. Además, busca que las políticas públicas dirigidas a la recuperación y reconstrucción del Puerto Rico post María se nutran de las propuestas desarrolladas desde estas organizaciones.
