Abstract
"This chapter blends African oral and written narratives, lived experiences with a genetic chronic disability and a Roman Catholic upbringing. These will be interrogated to illustrate the role of alternative explanations in influencing advocacy and activism for the lives, wellbeing, dignity and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Particularly, this chapter is an exploration of self-identity and how persons with disabilities are conditioned to view ourselves in specific ways while highlighting alternative perceptions available is presented by the author. It engages the works of several African and African-descendent authors who feature persons with disabilities as characters in their books and relies on narrative prosthesis as the basis for this engagement."

Event Description

Join the next SGP Gender Cafe on May 19, 2020 at 10 am EDT. This Gender Cafe highlights the work of the Coalition of Feminists for Social Change (COFEM), an advocacy collective of leaders, activists, practitioners and academics working globally to end violence against women and girls (VAWG). Speakers will share their experiences adapting GBV tools and mechanisms to assure accountability to women and girls during COVID-19. Following brief presentations, participants will join breakout rooms designed for connection, discussion, mutual support and activism to advance feminist, women-centered strategies for promoting the rights of, and ending violence against, women and girls.
