F Njahîra Wangarî - Book Chapter

Abstract
"This chapter blends African oral and written narratives, lived experiences with a genetic chronic disability and a Roman Catholic upbringing. These will be interrogated to illustrate the role of alternative explanations in influencing advocacy and activism for the lives, wellbeing, dignity and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Particularly, this chapter is an exploration of self-identity and how persons with disabilities are conditioned to view ourselves in specific ways while highlighting alternative perceptions available is presented by the author. It engages the works of several African and African-descendent authors who feature persons with disabilities as characters in their books and relies on narrative prosthesis as the basis for this engagement."

Dear All
In our work towards gender justice, understanding power, patriarchy, and feminism isn't just theoretical – it's essential. These concepts hold the key to unlocking gender-transformative work with men and boys.

That's why we're excited to announce the launch of our online course, Power, Patriarchy & Feminism as part of the MenEngage CoLab, designed specifically for those working with men and boys to create a more equitable world. The course is self-guided and free to all.

Whether you're a seasoned advocate or just starting your journey, this course offers:

  • In-depth exploration: Delve into the complex interplay of power, patriarchy, and feminism, and their impact on shaping gender norms and inequalities.
  • Diverse perspectives: Learn from leading experts and practitioners through video lectures, case studies, and interactive exercises.
  • Flexible learning: Tailor your experience to your schedule with self-paced modules and additional resources.

By the end of this course, you'll be able to:

  • Recognize and name different kinds of power
  • Unpack the feminist lens on power and its relevance to transforming masculinities.
  • Navigate gender and sex dynamics within patriarchal structures.
  • Effectively explore these concepts with men and boys in your work.
This course is the result of a collaboration with CREA that started in 2019 with a pilot course in Nepal. CREA and MenEngage Alliance worked together to adapt CREA’s conceptual framework on power, patriarchy and feminism to the work on masculinities. The feminist analytical lens used to understand power and patriarchy was applied to the work of transforming masculinities with men and boys for gender equality.

Currently, the course is only available in English.

Please do share this opportunity with relevant colleagues and networks.

We look forward to seeing your engagement with the course.
In solidarity,

The Global Secretaria Team,
MenEngage Alliance
