Abstract
"This chapter blends African oral and written narratives, lived experiences with a genetic chronic disability and a Roman Catholic upbringing. These will be interrogated to illustrate the role of alternative explanations in influencing advocacy and activism for the lives, wellbeing, dignity and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Particularly, this chapter is an exploration of self-identity and how persons with disabilities are conditioned to view ourselves in specific ways while highlighting alternative perceptions available is presented by the author. It engages the works of several African and African-descendent authors who feature persons with disabilities as characters in their books and relies on narrative prosthesis as the basis for this engagement."

The Institute of Social Studies Trust (ISST), in association with the Heinrich Böll Foundation, held the twelfth Gender and Economic Policy Discussion Forum (GEP) on 'Migration - Implications on Gender and Equity' on 16 April, 2014 at the India Habitat Centre.
Ms Indrani Mazumdar (CWDS), Dr S K Sasikumar (V V Giri National Labour Institute), Mr Nabesh Bohidar (CARE) and Ms Amrita Sharma (Aajeevika Bureau) presented at the forum which was chaired by Mr Partha Pratim Mitra (Ministry of Labour and Employment).
