Abstract
"This chapter blends African oral and written narratives, lived experiences with a genetic chronic disability and a Roman Catholic upbringing. These will be interrogated to illustrate the role of alternative explanations in influencing advocacy and activism for the lives, wellbeing, dignity and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Particularly, this chapter is an exploration of self-identity and how persons with disabilities are conditioned to view ourselves in specific ways while highlighting alternative perceptions available is presented by the author. It engages the works of several African and African-descendent authors who feature persons with disabilities as characters in their books and relies on narrative prosthesis as the basis for this engagement."

Please join Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) for the eighth webinar in our ongoing series, as medical, public health, and human rights experts discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the crisis of sexual and gender-based violence and intimate partner violence.

PHR Director of Programs Karen Naimer will moderate a conversation featuring:

● Dr. Claudia Garcia-Moreno, head of the World Health Organization’s Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research unit addressing vulnerable populations

● Dr. Lori Heise, professor of gender violence and health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with a joint appointment in the School of Nursing

● Wangechi Wachira, executive director of the Centre for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW) in Kenya
