Evaluation of UN Women’s Work on the Care Economy in East and Southern Africa

A regional study of gender equality observatories in West and Central Africa, carried out by Claudy Vouhé for UN Women

Sources: UN Women

This regional study offers an inventory and analysis of the legal framework of gender observatories, their attributions, functions and missions. It is based on exchanges with 21 countries, in particular the eleven countries that have created observatories. It compares the internal organisation and budgets of the observatories between countries, looks at operational practices, in particular the degree of involvement in the collection and use of data, and identifies obstacles and good practices in terms of influencing pro-gender equality public policies. Finally, the study draws up a list of strategic recommendations intended for observatories, supervisory bodies and technical and financial partners.

This article focused on the story of community living in a wildlife corridor that links India and Nepal, namely the Khata Corridor, which bridges Bardiya National Park of Nepal and Katarnia Wildlife Sanctuary of Uttar Pradesh, India.
This article revealed how the wildlife mobility in the corridor affects community livelihoods, mobility, and social inclusion, with a sense of differential impacts on farming and marginalised communities.

UN Women Evaluation Handbook: How to manage gender-responsive evaluation.

The Independent Evaluation Office of UN Women is pleased to share with you the new UN Women Evaluation Handbook: How to manage gender-responsive evaluation. This Evaluation Handbook is a practical handbook to help those initiating, managing and/or using gender-responsive evaluations. Although specific to UN Women evaluation processes, the Evaluation Handbook may be useful to international development evaluators and professionals, particularly those working on gender equality, women's empowerment and human rights. This handbook is part of a new “Professionalization of the evaluation function in UN Women” initiative to be launched in late 2015, which will include an e-learning, mentoring programme and credentialing. The aim of this new initiative is to support UN Women field offices in strengthening their capacity to plan, manage and use good quality gender-responsive evaluations. The UN Women Evaluation Handbook is being launched at an opportune time, as 2015 is a key year in the development landscape when it is expected that a transformative development agenda will be adopted. The year 2015 has also been named the International Year of Evaluation. Thus, it is a time to advocate and promote gender-responsive evaluation and evidence-based policy making. It is a time to reflect on how we can build strong systems for generating and using evidence and most importantly use this information to improve the work we do to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment. Gender-responsive evaluation is a powerful tool for achieving this transformative agenda. We hope that you will find the UN Women Evaluation Handbook useful for learning about managing gender-responsive evaluation.
