Evaluation of sexual harassment/women's mobility intervention

Hello all,

Getting back to you with a quick question. Is anyone aware of any interventions that have been evaluated on women's mobility/preventing sexual harassment and assault in public spaces. Public spaces can be anything from streets, public transport, public toilets, conflict affected areas, refugee camps, parks, public recreation areas etc. Could be from any 'sector' such as water and sanitation, transport, urban planning, creative arts and culture, design etc.

If there aren't any evaluated projects-can you at least point me to donor reports, project completion reports etc.

I am looking for evals from both developed and developing countries but a google search is not yielding many results.

Many thanks for your help.

From a very chilly fall afternoon in Washington DC

Best,

Tanya

Hi Tanya, how do you plan to use the information you are looking for? That will help members to help you. Thanks.

Hi Rituu,

Certainly! I am researching "What Works" to prevent sexual harassment for a UN agency report. This will inform best practices and evaluation efforts in some of their projects and in the field in general-specifically looking at Asia but wanted to start to see what was out there globally in developed and developing countries.

Thanks for your help Rituu

Best,

Tanya

Hi Tanya,

I can only say that this was part of the reasons for an early departure as CTA in a subcontract arrangement with a German bilateral agency. The agency agreed on my dismissal for 'personal reasons', due to a sexual harassment caused by an external private sector provider in the country (Lomé, Togo). I trust this was a good decision for me, although it might have caused complications for the project that had to search for my successor. "All is well that ends well", sitting at my home desk in preparation for my next assignment :-), Susanne

Hi Tanya,

Have you tried checking the UN Women gender equality evaluation portal? (http://genderevaluation.unwomen.org/en)

I can be a bit tricky because there is no "keyword" for sexual harassment or public spaces but I believe you could find interesting results if you look for campaigns, for example. My guess is that civil society would be a better source of information in this topic than the UN or other big donors.

Hi Tanya! So great to see you here. You might check with the Huairou commission to see if any of their programs have been evaluated. http://huairou.org/safety

There was an initiative of UN Women Brazil in partnership with DfID in Rio de Janeiro about street harassment. I am not sure if it was evaluated but you could contact UN Women Brazil to get to know more about it.

Hi Tanya,

I would encourage you to take a look at the evaluations from UN Women available on our GATE system ( http://gate.unwomen.org/) several of which are likely relevant for your research, including evaluations of Safe Cities programmes. We also maintain a Gender Equality Evaluation Portal (http://genderevaluation.unwomen.org/en) that is searchable that should have some relevant reports as well. Hope this helps.

Dear Tania

being in this work for nearly decade , non has made any effort or opportunity on this subjects. Have some reasons not to as well do want to

1. Clear methodology is the biggest obstacle.

2. Quality of the Data also issue.

3. Selection of Categories and criteria too is questionable.

Then how it will can proceed. Why this is important us to do at least  to conduct a size estimations. We are lauding day basis of VAW and but forgetting we are far behind the facts and numbers.

Other thing? we react to the issues when alarm rings on either by a death of the victim or popular known cases heard by the court of justice. This must stoped. Today the country I live reacted again  after the death of 5 year old girl (abused and killed), 10 year old Boy Hacked to death and 3 year old were abused and abandoned in the jungle. But daily even at this moment it is happening most dangerously with a knowledge of the parents and loved once .

I appealed to  you concentrate on psychological factors of rapist behaviours in order to eliminate sexual abuses and so we can assured that our love once will be free .

Hi:
I am not sure how helpful this will be, but in  the ELLA Programme we have looked into finding best practices en Latin America on preventing and addressing gender violence. A little bit more broader thatn what you mention but maybe there is something in here that can help you

In here you can find papers

http://ella.practicalaction.org/ella-knowledge/?thema=gender-and-vi...

And in here list of organisations  working in Latin America y gender and vioence, femicide and violence, and access to justice ( and also other papers, not authored by the ELLA programme  relating to those themes)

http://ella.practicalaction.org/ella-knowledge/?thema=gender-and-vi...

Hope this helps!
