NOTE: I wrote this Blog on the 20th March  2013 and it was posted on the Research Blog of the School of International Development, University of East Anglia, UK.

Its content is relevant to my practice as I guide and support organisations through their own self-reflective gender reviews /audits/assessments  to improve practice for gender equality…

Evaluating SDGs with an equity focused and gender responsive lens

Looking particularly into the Indian context, here are some of the thoughts, while we undertake the journey towards SDGs:

  • Considering the diversities and complexities of the social & economic vulnerabilities & exclusion in India, achieving SDGs by 2030 will be as challenging as it was for MDGs, both for the Indian Government and the National & International Development partners / actors
  • "Exclusion" is a key factor for the vulnerability and…

Rigid Gender Gaps and Missing SDG Targets and Indicators

The Global Gender Gap Report 2016 draws attention to the widening of gender gap in health and economic sphere. Two indicators are used in this report with respect to gender gap gap in health: gap in healthy life expectancy and sex ratio at birth (after adjusting for the fact that more males are born). Sex ratio at birth (female-over-male) amongst the countries studied has declined from 0.94 to 0.92 (1 being equality) between 2006 and 2015, while gender gap in healthy life expectancy has…

Equity, SDG indicators and systems thinking

In this blog I would like to use parts of the  Rajagopalan’s (2015) Immersive Systemic  Knowing framework. He distinguishes between four ways of knowing:  being, cognition, doing and learning. Being refers to ways of living, existing and relating with others and environment which is shaped by culture and history.  Cognition is the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses. Doing refers to activities in which one engages.…

The importance of participatory monitoring of outcomes.

In my previous blog, "What's in a baseline" in the last sentence I say, "...we need to put more emphasis on E and less on M in M & E". What I meant to say was exactly the opposite, that is, 'more emphasis on M and less on E in M & E'.

What I failed to do was monitor what I was doing. It was only later, when Rituu Nanda made a comment that I realized my error. But it was too late! This is exactly what happens so often in community development - outputs get monitored instead of…

A survey on feminist and gender-responsive evaluation in India

I am a French sociologist and political scientist, working on the women’s movement in South Asia. I first heard about feminist/gender-responsive evaluation as I was starting to investigate the recent transformations of feminism in the region. I was immediately interested by the idea of “feminist evaluation”, as so far, as I had often heard of Monitoring and Evaluation as a burden for feminist/women’s oriented NGOs and project. I am both interested in the conceptual…

Gender Equality:what's in it for men?

Gender equality: what’s in it for men?

When we talk about gender equality, aren’t we talking about women’s participation and empowerment? So why work with men? Involving men and boys in programmes on gender equality is something that has been overlooked for many years, but there is increasing evidence that in order to address gender inequality effectively, men have to become part of the debate and take up an active role in modelling positive gender attitudes and…

What's in a baseline?

Recently I was in Afghanistan working with an NGO to establish a baseline for a project aimed at improving the participation of women in civic and political activity and also improving women's empowerment. The NGO had engaged me to help them with establishing a baseline after someone had given them my name as a practitioner who has a preference for practical, understandable methods where people can engage on their terms, in preference to using set surveys to extract data in response to…

A Ridiculously Short Introduction to Monitoring & Evaluation for Women’s Economic Empowerment in Market Systems Development*

So you want to measure and/or evaluate a programme with Women’s Economic Empowerment? The programme is using a market systems approach? Don’t know where to start? I was equally curious. Luckily, a number of very smart and experienced people have written and spoken on the subject. Below are some of the key points that stuck with me while I’ve been reading up on this subject.

Understand your Intervention

To monitor and/or evaluate a programme, it is…
